Atheism: Does It, Should It, Bring You Joy—or Despair?
One thing you can say about NYC Atheists’ Meetup Discussion leader Michael Dorian: he’s not afraid to tackle any topic—be it weird, controversial, far-out or scary. But how about this one, a topic that sears the soul of every thinking Atheist, something that we have all thought about in our dark nights—but, talk about it in public?—no way.
What is that topic? In Michael’s own words, (and he explains that some of his friends actually suggested this topic): “Atheism—what’s the point?”
Explains Michael, “Aside from the obvious point of ensuring the separation of church and state, what are our personal/collective goals? And how does leading an atheistic life provide fulfillment and purpose in an otherwise ‘spiritually’ bankrupt and morally nebulous world?”
If that sounds despairing, let me disabuse you of that: Michael, a talented documentary filmmaker (his film “Pizza—The Movie” made it to Channel 31), a grant-winning playwright and an educator, even did a stint as a stand-up comic at one point in his life. If anybody reaches into this world with hope, joy and talent, it is Michael. But there is also an undercurrent of anger, passion and rebellion in his character that many of us will identify with.
Where Is the Fulfillment?
So how indeed does an Atheist life provide fulfillment and purpose? Come on Tuesday, February 16, to the Stone Creek Bar & Pub to defend (or decry) the joys and hardships of Atheism with our daring duo, Michael Dorian and his leadership partner, Alexandra Sidiropoulos.
Charming, compassionate Alex, whose poise and wisdom far exceed her 26 years, is originally from Missouri, though her ancestors came from Greece, the land of Socrates. Today, she works in a law firm that specializes in intellectual property and in her spare time, she is also co-host of one of NYCA’s Cable TV shows.
Come on Tuesday to hear our dynamic twosome lead the discussion of a topic that some people in the Atheist movement may not want to admit even exists—the existential question of what possible impact can Atheism have on our reason for being. Give us your heartfelt thoughts among friendly nonbelievers who will understand and identify with you.
